Carbery Estate was
established in 1978 by Ross Carbery, with the first Percheron purchased
in 1979. At this time, Australian Draught Horses were being bred. In 1983 Ross visited the first World Percheron Congress held
in North America in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Extremely impressed by
the 500 plus percherons on show at the congress with a different style
to that of the French and Australian bred horse, Ross was encouraged to
re-visit Canada from where he imported a 6 year old Percheron stallion
Prince Patrick Du Mordhief (Ricky; died 23 years old) & a Percheron
yearling filly Shananagn Flora Lena (Lena). Both Ricky & Lena were the
foundation Percherons from which Carbery Estate blossomed, with their
arrival leading to many great successes. On record, a North American
Percheron had not been imported into Australia for 51 years since
Blanche Kesako, a very victorious shown mare in the 1930’s.
In 1987, Carbery
Estate imported two Percheron mares from Canada, Donamerr’s Miss Ashlea
& Donamerr’s Miss Becky-Lea. While in 1989, Northwoods Midnight Satin,
a Percheron mare from the United States was imported, whilst remaining
un-defeated in her Australian showing history. In September 1996, a
yearling Percheron colt JP Commanders Stargate was imported, breeding
half a dozen mares the following March 1997. Unfortunately due to a
sudden illness, Stargate passed away in 1998. However, very happy with
the offspring by Stargate, Carbery Estate imported a full brother to the
deceased stallion, JP Commanders Starship, in 1999. Starship was a
result of an embryo transfer, with his recipient mother being a quarter
horse.
Carbery Estate breeds
the North American style of Percheron with increased athleticism, style
& more refined. Specialising in black Percherons, Carbery Estate is
currently the largest breeder of purebred Percherons in Australia.
Carbery Estate has had the greatest impact on the Percheron bred in
Australia since its establishment in 1978.
In 1987, Carbery
Estate expanded to breeding Belgian draught horses, importing three pure
bred Belgian mares from Canada & one pure bred stallion from the United
States. This was the first time purebred Belgian mares where imported
to Australia. In 2004, on travels to the World Percheron Congress in
Brandan, Manitoba, Creekside Prince, a purebred Belgian weanling colt
(born May 2004) was imported from Creekside Stud in Manitoba, Canada.
In 2001, Carbery Estate’s first draught mule
(donkey-jack over horse-mare) was successful result of an artificial
insemination (AI) program employed by Equine Artificial Breeding
Services (EABS;
www.eabs.com.au). John Menzies from
Birdsville, Queensland, approached Carbery Estate & instigated the
breeding of the draught mules of which he purchased two chestnuts and
two blacks. The sire of all Carbery Estate draught mules is the USA
imported mammoth Jack- Cokeley Major Leo who stands at EABS in the
breeding season & owned by Hans & Pat Streefkerk.
Today, Carbery Estate
is the leader in breeding purebred Percherons, purebred Belgians &
Draught Riding & Pack Mules.
